OpenAI’s Top Scientists Threaten Mass Exodus to Microsoft Following Sam Altman Ousting
The turmoil at OpenAI has reached a boiling point as hundreds of employees threaten to join Microsoft after the shock sacking of co-founder Sam Altman. In a scathing letter released to Wired, some of the most influential members of OpenAI declared they would resign if the board did not undergo a complete overhaul. “Your actions have made it obvious that you are incapable of overseeing OpenAI,” the letter stated, highlighting the unrest within the company.
The list of signers included Ilya Sutskever, the chief scientist, and Mira Murati, who was demoted after being appointed as CEO following Altman’s dismissal. Reports suggest that as many as 500 of OpenAI’s 770 employees signed the letter in a show of solidarity with their senior leadership.
While Altman’s abrupt departure sparked speculation about safety concerns relating to AI technology, Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Amazon’s streaming platform Twitch, has been appointed as OpenAI’s new CEO. Shear denied these rumors, stating that Altman was removed for different reasons and that the process and communications surrounding his removal had been poorly executed, damaging the trust within the company.
