OpenAI has had an eventful week, with the company announcing new features at its developer conference, DevDay. The CEO, Sam Altman, revealed that one of the marquee new services, custom GPTs, was delayed due to heavier than expected usage, which turned out to be a DDoS attack. However, OpenAI was able to release GPTs to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers and CEO Sam Altman even took the opportunity to publicly tease his former business partner and AI rival, Elon Musk.

Altman used Musk’s X social network to tweet about the GPT release, taking a jab at Musk in the process. This public feud stems from a falling out between the two, with Musk seeking to take control of OpenAI over its move away from open source models. Altman used OpenAI’s GPT Builder to create a chatbot designed to respond with “cringey boomer humor,” a direct dig at Musk’s own language model, Grok.

While these personal feuds continue, OpenAI remains at the forefront of consumer-facing generative AI. The company has already made a number of custom GPTs available, and third-party users are also beginning to share their creations. Now, it’s up to Musk’s xAI and other competitors to respond to OpenAI’s latest developments.
