Google Chrome’s New Feature: Memory Usage Tracker

A new feature on the desktop Chrome browser now allows users to monitor the memory usage of each individual tab, aiding in identifying which sites are causing their laptop to slow down.

Following the launch of Google Chrome’s Memory Saver mode earlier this year, the latest feature reports memory usage on individual tabs when hovered over in the browser. The update is available on multiple desktop platforms, including ChromeOS, Windows, and Mac, as long as the user is running Google Chrome version 119 or later.

The feature displays domain and page names, along with a mini report showing each page’s RAM usage. This report includes information about memory consumption caused by the tab’s content, as well as background processes that are consuming memory. Inactive tabs are also shown when the Memory Saver feature pauses them for memory conservation.

This new memory usage monitoring feature promises to be very beneficial for users to track down tabs and processes that may be slowing down their system. It also simplifies the process of finding tab usage stats, eliminating the need to navigate through menus.

Additionally, the recent feature is part of an extension of Chrome’s Memory and Energy Saver modes, introduced earlier this year. Memory Saver mode is designed to save memory from inactive tabs, improving the efficiency of other tabs on the desktop. Energy Saver mode, on the other hand, conserves the PC’s battery life by reducing visual and background activity.

Both modes are by default activated, with adjustments possible in the Chrome Settings sidebar. This update to Chrome’s desktop browser serves to provide users with enhanced performance and battery conservation.
