Google has reportedly delayed a highly-anticipated series of artificial intelligence (AI) events showcasing the company’s Gemini generative AI tool. This delay poses a significant setback to Google’s efforts to compete with ChatGPT in the world of AI.

According to a paywalled report from The Information, the Gemini event was scheduled to take place next week, but CEO Sundar Pichai has made the decision to push it back to January 2024. The reason cited for the delay is that Google was not confident that Gemini could “reliably handle some non-English queries.”

The events, which were supposed to take place in California, New York, and Washington, were labeled as “Google’s most important product launch of the year.” However, the delay is a setback for Google as it tries to catch up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Despite the imminent dates, Google had not done much promotion for the events, perhaps due to concerns over Gemini’s abilities. The delay serves as a demonstration of Google’s struggles to compete with OpenAI, given its vast wealth and engineering abilities.

This delay comes after OpenAI’s reported major breakthrough with its own generative AI efforts, increasing the pressure on Google to respond. It is believed that Google will integrate Gemini’s AI capabilities into its other products, such as Search, Google Assistant, and Google Docs.

Overall, the delay signifies a significant setback for Google as it strives to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. Users who regularly utilize Google’s apps should anticipate AI updates by early next year.
