In a shocking incident, a resident of Nallasopara fell victim to cybercriminals when he attempted to recharge his FasTag account, resulting in a substantial loss of ₹2.4 lakh. The 47-year-old victim was trying to resolve a FasTag issue and resorted to searching for a contact number online. Unknowingly, he stumbled upon a cyber scammer who pretended to be an official call center employee. The fraudster, masking his true intentions, provided false reassurances to the victim and instructed him to download a remote access application on his phone.
Trusting the imposter, the victim followed the fraudulent instructions and unknowingly became part of an elaborate scam. In the blink of an eye, ₹2.4 lakh was fraudulently withdrawn from his bank account through six online transactions, as reported by India Today.
Adding insult to injury, after successfully swindling the victim, the bogus ‘customer support executive’ ceased all communication, leaving the victim questioning his own judgment and regretting his trust in the fraudster.
Realizing he had been deceived, the victim promptly contacted the police for assistance. Charges have now been filed under Section 66C of the Information Technology Act and additional relevant provisions.
