A New VPN That Might Actually Keep You Private
If you’re eager to take control over your data and ensure greater privacy online, finding a robust VPN may be high on your to-do list. So called “virtual private network” services promise to mask your true IP address and encrypt all internet traffic leaving your device in order to keep you anonymous. However, VPNs aren’t a fail-safe solution according to some, and this is where Nym Technology steps in.
Nym Technology, a Swiss startup, has unveiled a new VPN software designed to provide enhanced security while addressing concerns about trust in other providers. The company made the announcement at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon on November 16, 2023, with CEO Harry Halpin and security consultant Chelsea Manning leading the charge.
Pinning the problem on trust, Halpin argued that traditional VPNs require users to place their trust in servers operated by others, potentially compromising privacy. And while providers may tout a “no-log” policy, the reality is not always so straightforward, as history has shown.
Drawing on his personal experience as a target of government surveillance, Halpin emphasized the need for more effective privacy tools, prompting the development of NymVPN. “We would like something that provides the benefits of a VPN with better privacy, what we call trustlessness,” Halpin said. “You don’t have to trust us or anyone else because we don’t have to collect your data.”
Set to rival established VPN services, NymVPN differentiates itself by employing a groundbreaking mix network technology, which was originally conceptualized by cryptographic expert David Chaum in the 1980s. Inspired by her experiences in prison, Chelsea Manning developed this technology further, which processes data from different devices together to conceal individual users within a “crowd”. The resulting network eliminates the potential for third parties to intercept identifiable data patterns.
In addition to this, NymVPN provides a fully-decentralized network for those seeking faster speeds, backed by the innovative WireGuard protocol. The application of Blockchain technology further fortifies the system, ensuring that payments remain decentralized and the network remains immune to any potential future regulations.
Once operational, NymVPN will allow users to gauge their connection’s anonymity and privacy based on network activity, offering unprecedented transparency in the world of VPNs. This unique feature, combined with the advanced blending of traffic through mix networks, sets NymVPN apart as a promising contender in the global privacy and security market.
Anticipating rapid growth in regions like the Middle East, Eastern Europe, South America, and Asia, Nym Technology is positioned for substantial progress. With a larger user base, the company hopes to achieve a network that grants users seamless ‘crowd-like’ anonymity on a vast, international scale.
Halpin, however, emphasizes that achieving privacy excellence will always be a work in progress. “Creating something like a decent VPN will always be an arms race,” says Halpin. “So, we don’t want to advertise ourselves as perfect, but we will advertise ourselves as a team that will constantly work to improve.”
