Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde: The Ultimate Review

In my own personal experience with the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde, it wasn’t love at first sight. However, after just one day of using it in my home, I can confidently say that I never want to be without it. This may seem like a strong statement for a big and bulky purifier fan, but I stand by it. This purifier is unlike any of Dyson’s previous models in terms of design and functionality. It should be noted that the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde is not the same as the HEPA Big+Quiet purifier designed for commercial spaces.

As the name suggests, this purifier is big and quiet. It is specifically designed to circulate clean air in large rooms while standing in a corner. According to Dyson, it can effectively service spaces up to 100sqm in size and project filtered air up to 10m. Additionally, the angle of the air can be adjusted, providing powerful fan functionality. And despite its power, it remains quiet, with a noise level of under 56dB.

Dyson has utilized cone aerodynamics to enhance the Coanda effect, which is a feature found in their other purifiers. According to the brand, this allows the Big+Quiet to process up to 87 liters of air per second. While this metric is difficult to measure, I trust Dyson’s claims, especially when I experienced the power of the propelled air firsthand.

It’s worth mentioning that there are two models of the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde, each with its own color scheme. The Dyson-exclusive model is more expensive because it includes an additional CO2 sensor and a second filter. The CO2 sensor is particularly useful, as it helps monitor the air quality in your home. I was shocked to see how quickly CO2 levels can rise when windows are kept closed. If left in Auto mode, the Big+Quiet will adjust its fan speed to circulate stale air, but it’s also a sign that windows or doors should be opened to reduce CO2 levels.

Both models of the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde include sensors that detect common pollutants such as dust, pet dander, pollen, formaldehyde, NO2, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants are then filtered by a HEPA filter that meets the highest purification standards. Dyson claims that this filter can capture up to 99.95% of air particles as small as 0.1 microns, and it can last up to five years.

The purifier features a small onboard display that shows the levels of different pollutants in your home. These metrics can also be accessed through the MyDyson app, which allows you to connect your device to your phone and receive automatic firmware updates.

While the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde offers numerous features, it comes with a hefty price tag. It is Dyson’s most expensive domestic-use purifier to date. However, if you have the budget and the space for it, it can be a worthwhile investment, especially for those concerned about their health, particularly during wildfire seasons.

As for availability and pricing, Dyson released the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde range in Australia first, with two colorway options. The cheaper model can be purchased for $999 / AU$1,499, while the Dyson-exclusive model with additional features costs $1,099 / AU$1,599.

Despite its high price, the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde offers value for those with large, open homes who prioritize clean air quality. Alternative options are available at lower price points, but they may not offer the same level of performance and features.

In terms of design, the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde may not be visually appealing to everyone. Its large bowl structure atop a cylinder can initially appear bulky. However, it is surprisingly lightweight and comes with hidden wheels for easy maneuverability. The perforated design allows for clean air to be propelled into the room, while a small display provides information on pollutant levels.

Overall, the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde offers impressive performance and advanced features. While it may not be the most visually pleasing option, its functionality and ability to purify large spaces make it a valuable investment for those looking to improve air quality in their homes.
